Touchdown! - February 26, 2023

Scott Farnsworth

TOUCHDOWN! Well… we’ve touched down in Singapore. We hang out here at the airport until 1 p.m.-ish and then fly to Krabi. After 16+ hours of flying I’m feeling a bit crabby. Krabi... crabby... coincidence?

It’s 8 a.m. local time, which means it’s 8 p.m. back home in Austin. The temperature here is 79 degrees. We flew from Austin to Las Vegas to LA and then caught our Singapore Airlines flight here. As our departure date grew nearer our ‘Do before we leave…’ list got longer and longer. Being gone for 72 days will do that to you. A big thanks to everyone watching our house while we’re gone.

Our #1 job was being in LA in time to catch our flight. What could possibly go wrong? It’s not like they’re going to have a big blizzard there and tons of flights are going to be cancelled or delayed. FUDGE! Something similar happened to us not too long ago. This past Boxing Day, December 26th, we were scheduled to fly to visit family in the Bay Area. After waiting at the Austin Airport for hours our Southwest flight was cancelled (also initiated by crazy weather) and we eventually just caught a rideshare home. We did get out four days later.

This time delaying wasn’t really an option. Our LAX to Singapore flight was going with us or without us, and if we weren’t there it was taking our money with it. Thankfully there are lots of flights on Southwest (and other) airlines going into LAX and nearby airports, so we had options. On the downside that led to lots of heartburn and second guessing. Would we catch our 7:50 PM flight out of LAX!!?

In the end we didn’t switch flights or airlines, but stuck to our original AUS - Las Vegas - LAX plan. And… with the weather we were delayed and didn’t get into LAX until 7PM. And on top of that we were in the wrong terminal and we had to go through security again. No way we were catching our flight. The good news? We had our flight time wrong. We’d been switched to another flight that was leaving at 11pm. YAY!

So we had a leisurely glass of wine (or two) at Vino Volo, just down from our gate, and had an uneventful flight. We did sleep and soon were saying “wow, only seven more hours to Singapore, not bad!” It’s interesting how your point of view changes when the total flight time is listed at close to 18 hours.

So now it’s through customs and immigration so that we can explore the amazing Singapore Airport while we wait for our afternoon flight. But that will be another story for another day.

Karen sitting at gate Infinity (next to our actual gate #14). Note the row of chairs behind.

"Dinner" at LAX prior to our 10:25pm departure (and dinner on the plane). Maybe the last raw vegetables in a while?

At LAX at Vino Volo having a nightcap.

At Vino Volo, seems like someone stole our idea! (wink)

Our plane is big but not as big as this one. Yikes!

En route. Flying over a ton of the Pacific.

Finally in Asia. In the Singapore Airport. At a lounge. Having coffee.

But... the lounge also has a breakfast buffet. Should we??
